Chapter I – Not Shinigami
It was another clear day, a blue sky with barely any clouds, like a silence before a storm. A young man with orange hair walks to school accompanied by his friends, unaware that three miles away from his school and one mile in the air, a rupture in the dimensional appeared. Through it an older man and a teenage girl, wearing the same white suit with a white trench coat over it entered into the sky and floated above the city for a few moments. The man had short blue spiky hair and brown eyes, as he looked around, his red-haired companion with green eyes pouted. Around their waists they wore the only thing that distinguished them, two belts that held their katana. His was blue while hers was red. “Are we going or not?†she asked breaking the silence. “Be patient, Scelera. We have an important mission,†he replied. “So that means…†“No unnecessary fighting… I know, I know…†In a blink of an eye the two of them disappeared without a trace and the sky was empty again. Meanwhile, a few miles away at a local candy shop, hidden away in the suburbs, two children were busy sweeping the front yard. While the young girl with black hair was quietly going about her business, the young man with red hair was pretending to be in an ardent fight with someone. “Yeah! Take that and that!†he shouted as he swung his broom from left to right. “Jinta-kun, you should really do your part too,†she said in a shy tone. “Eh? What’s your problem Ururu? I do thing my way!†The girl made no reply but went back to do her job. Suddenly they both stopped and looked to their left where the two who had appeared in the sky were standing. “What do you want?†Jinta asked. “The owner’s gone!†“How fortunate,†the man with the blue belt said. “It will make things much easier.†Back at his school, the young man with orange hair was looking out the window with a bored look on his face that changed in a heartbeat when he felt a powerful reiatsu not too far away. A second later, he found himself falling off his seat and then his head collided with his desk then the floor. “Teacher!†a girl, with shoulder length black hair, shouted. “Kurosaki isn’t feeling well! I will take him to the nurse’s office,†she added dragging him out of the classroom. The others stopped for a few moments to look at the scene then went back to their lesson. Outside, the two who had left class were running towards the exit. “Damn it, Rukia!†the boy complained. “You could have thought of an excuse without pulling my chair out from under me.†“Then it wouldn’t have been convincing,†she retorted. “Now quit complaining and let’s go. There’s something very strange about this reiatsu.†The two of them remained silent as they ran to the location where they last felt that reiatsu from earlier. But when they got to the candy shop, the two children were on the floor unconscious and the teenage girl with red hair stood over them with her katana in her right hand. Seeing his friends like that infuriated him and he immediately left his body behind, as did Rukia. “Hey you!†he shouted. “What the hell did you do to Ururu and Jinta?†“Eh?†the girl made looking at them. “Oh! Shinigami! Looks like this trip won’t be a waste after all.†“Keep them busy while I search the shop,†her companion said walking towards the store. “Who are you? What are you doing here?†Rukia demanded, then she examined their clothes and asked. “Are you… Shinigami?†“Of course, we should not be ill-mannered,†the man said turning around. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Caspian Leviathan of the Shadow and this is my companion Ina Phoenix. And let me assure you that we are not Shinigami. And you are?†“Kuchiki Rukia of the 13th squad and Kurosaki Ichigo, Shinigami R…†“He’s not!†Ina interrupted. “You’re not Shinigami, are you? You’re vizard!†she yelled and attacked Ichigo head on. He managed to block her attack but was thrown back and almost knocked off his feet. As fast as she was, he almost moved too late and her strength was stunning. “How’d you know?†Ichigo asked. She did not answer but attacked him again and again. Not using any advanced moves, she merely hit again and again, steadily forcing him back. Though he could have easily outmaneuvered such attacks, her speed and strength warned against it. Meanwhile, Rukia went after the other one and stepped in between him and the shop. However, unlike the other two, they did not seem as eager to start fighting. “You did not answer my second question,†Rukia stated. “Our mission is none of your concern, at least not at the moment.†“Then if you want to get any further, you’ll have to go through me,†Rukia said. "Mae, Sode No Shirayuki." Ichigo was starting to see that the fight was going nowhere and he would eventually run out of room and have nowhere to retreat. Putting a little more strength in his block, he managed to push away and back up a few steps. Then he raised his sword to his chest and after the bandage hanging down from the handle wrapped itself around his arm he opened his mouth and said: “Bankai!†He was engulfed in reiatsu and then attacked without waiting another second. To his great surprise, not only did she block his attack but she had also been expecting. Though his increased speed seemed to make things easier, her superior strength still made it a one sided fight. Every time their blades collided, his black sword was pushed back. “I know you’ve got more than this!†she yelled at him. “Come on, give me your best, vizard!†Seeing as there was no way out of it, he raised his left hand to his face and as he pulled away, dark red reiatsu was left to trace the movement and cover his face with the mask of a hollow. With his power at maximum, Ichigo attacked her again only to find that his power was barely equal to hers. His first attack was blocked but his second never came because she pushed him back and then started her attack again. However, their fight was no longer one sided as he seemed to be able to match both her strength and speed. But his mind was not on his fight because if she was that strong, if her partner was just as strong Rukia would be no match for him. His worries were confirmed when he heard her scream and taking his eyes of his opponent he saw her fall to the ground, wounded but alive. That split second was all his enemy needed to land a blow that went from his waist to his left shoulder, which also knocked him to the ground. “Never take your eyes off your opponent, you idiot,†Ina said pointing her sword at his neck. “Your last mistake,†she added with a wicked smile on her face. “My, my… what a mess,†came a voice from her right. As she turned he saw a man in a shaggy coat, wearing a stripped hat on over his blonde hair and holding a wooden walking stick in his right hand and a paper fan in his left. On his right was a tall man with black cornrows and eyeglasses, carrying several boxes. “Kurosaki-san, you’ve made some new friends?†he asked. “Who are you?†the red-haired girl asked annoyed. “If I am not mistaken,†Caspian said turning his back on his defeated opponent. “This must be the owner, Urahara Kisuke.†“Really?†Ina said smiling. “I’m lucky today.†“Lucky? Maybe… but what kind of luck?†Kisuke said releasing his sword.

Chapter II – Old friend, new enemy
Taking advantage of her momentary distraction, Ichigo stood up and put his mask back on. Caspian walked next to his partner and while Ichigo and Kisuke faced them and prepared to attack, Tessai ran to Rukia and the two children. Ichigo waited, hoping his friend had a plan because even though he used to be captain, their enemies seemed to be as strong as they were, if not stronger. “Hey! You got a plan?†Ichigo asked almost as a whisper. “Not really…†“What?!†Ichigo demanded. “Well I thought you had come up with something, seeing as you have already fought them,†Kisuke explained with an innocent smile. “Looks like it’ll be the old fashioned way,†Ichigo said smiling. “Make sure you don’t get killed.†“Enough talk!†Ina shouted and attacked Ichigo while Caspian concentrated on Kisuke. While the red-haired young woman attacked the younger of the two, Caspian seemed to be more focused on his fight with Urahara. His first attack had been blocked, as well as his second and several others almost with ease. His opponent was not to be underestimated. But even though he kept a calm and smiling expression on his face, it was clear that the candy shop owner was concerned about the two children and the woman who had first tried to fight off his opponent. When the two of them stopped for a few moments, he looked Caspian in the eyes and saw that he was not taking any chances in that fight either. So far they had not fought at their full potential but had gradually used more and more power to see how the other would react. “I am sorry to interrupt but I could not help notice something,†Kisuke said not taking his eyes off him. “Not at all, please continue.†“By what I have seen, you and that young woman seem to have the same power level, am I correct?†“Yes, that is true,†Caspian confirmed. “And the same technique in using your sword,†Kisuke continued. “Indeed.†“Then I beg your pardon but if this is as strong as you are, you can not possible win.†“We shall see,†Caspian said and attacked again. Even though he was getting used to her attacks, her strength and speed was making it difficult to counterattack. What he did learn was that their style was not any advanced form of sword fighting; however, it was very efficient because it left little openings. After trying to hit her a few times with Getsuga Tenshou, he gave it up as it was draining his energy and had no effect on her. To have time to hit he had to put enough distance between them but by the time his kidou attack struck, she had enough time to dodge. Eventually he did manage to hit her. Pretending to have been shaken by their collision, he rested on one knee and held his sword by the hilt and leaned on it. Thinking it was her opportunity, his opponent attacked but using all his strength he jumped in the air just as she slashed and wasted no more second in using his sword’s special attack. After landing and waiting for the smoke to clear up, he saw that his attack had given her a wound on her back the size she had given him earlier. Unfortunately, it only seemed to feed her enthusiasm more because when she attacked again, her fighting was more erratic and out of control. Meanwhile, Kisuke had been fighting his opponent for long enough formulate a plan, which he had act upon soon as he knew that his attacker would do the same. Both he and Caspian had been studying each other, their speed, their strength and their technique and if he did not attack, the strange attacker in white would. Using shunpo, he got behind him and used his zanpakutou’s kidou attack but his enemy was prepared for it and jumped in the air only to realise it was only a ploy to catch him off his guard. Turning from left to right he could not find the former captain anywhere and by the time he figured out where he should have been looking, a blast of crimson kidou energy hit him from above. After landing, Kisuke waited for him to stand up, which he did with difficulty, still holding his sword. The attack had shredded his clothes, though it did not seem too deep because he was not bleeding too heavily. The shop owner was more and more curious about who and what they were. Though they fought with the weapons of Shinigami, their clothes were white. They could not have been Arrancar because they did not have a whole in their body, to represent their Hollow origins. “You’re pretty strong and your powers are vaguely similar to that of a Shinigami,†Kisuke commented. “As I said before,†Caspian said panting. “We are not Shinigami. We are Shadow.†“How interesting, are there more of you shadows?†“There are ten of us but I must correct you. We are not shadows, we are Shadow.†“I’m afraid I do not understand,†Kisuke replied. “It is quite simple, we are ten but…†Caspian began but was interrupted. “Enough!†came a voice from behind him and as he turned he saw a tall woman with short white hair and blue eyes, wearing the same style of clothing as the two who attacked them, and holding a large backpack full of small transparent globes in it. Around her waist was a belt that held her sword just like the others’ only hers was as white as her hair. “Y… you,†Kisuke said lowering his sword, almost dropping it. “Don’t take your eyes of your opponent!†Ina shouted and swung her sword. “Phoenix!†the woman with white hair shouted and the girl instantly froze. “We’re leaving,†she added and opened a rupture in the dimensional walls. Ina and Caspian both sheathed their swords and quickly followed her. Ichigo looked at them confused but Kisuke seemed too shocked to speak. Annoyed he didn’t know what was going on and that his enemies were simply walking away from their fight, Ichigo stood up, though leaning on his sword, and shouted: “Hey! Those don’t belong to you!†“Be thankful you are still alive, little vizard,†the woman said looking at him with the corner of her eye. “Kasumi…†Kisuke finally managed to voice the word his mouth had been refusing to mutter. “So you still remember my name,†the woman with white hair said looking at him with a frown. “Even though you betrayed us,†she added. “And as for you,†she said turning towards Ichigo. “You and I will meet again,†then left through the rupture after the other two and closed. Still confused by everything, wounded and tired, Ichigo managed to walk next to the still petrified Kisuke and shake him out of it. “Hey! What’s going on? Who were those guys?†“I only recognised her,†he replied turning his sword back into a cane and lowering his head. “She’s someone I… failed.â€

Chapter III – Mistakes
After they were sure their attackers would not return, Tessai went to get Inoue as she would be more efficient and faster in healing the two children. While they were looking after the wounded, Ichigo was sitting on the porch next to Kisuke who seemed more absent-minded than usual. He no longer had his usual smile on and looked like he had seen a ghost. Ichigo remained silent, still surprised by their incredible strength and annoyed that he fought so poorly, seeing as his power matched theirs. The silence was only broken when Rukia came out and sat down in the space between them. “You should have Inoue look at those wounds,†she said looking at the cut across Ichigo’s torso. “It’s nothing, I can wait,†he replied. “I noticed you recognised that woman,†she said turning towards Kisuke. “Who were those people? And more importantly, what were they?†“I’m afraid I have little information about them. We met her a long time ago, before I was promoted to captain.†“We?†Rukia asked. “Yoruichi and I,†Kisuke explained. “Though it was for a brief period of time, we became close friends. She was lieutenant in the 2nd squad at the time. When she went on a mission to hunt down several rogue Shinigami, she was almost killed and lost her powers.†Their conversation was interrupted when Inoue came out of the shop and insisted she healed Ichigo as well, something which Rukia agreed to. As she looked at him, Inoue saw the same distant and upset look on his face that he had when they were attacked by the Arrancar and started to worry. It seemed that the appearance of Shadow had not gone unnoticed by Seiretei because before his injuries were completely closed, a portal appeared just outside the shop. Through it came vice captain of the 6th squad, Abarai Renji, vice captain of the 10th squad Matsumoto Rangiku and juban tai taichou, Hitsugaya Toushirou. Apparently, their strange reiatsu had shown up on their radars and Commander Yamamoto thought it would be worth investigating. After sitting down at a table inside the shop and filling in the new arrivals on everything that had happened and everything they had learned so far, Kisuke was asked to continue his story about the apparent leader of Shadow. “After losing her powers, she was forced to leave Seiretei and establish herself here, in the human world. After a while, I met her again and we started looking for a way to help her regain her Shinigami powers; that was after I became Captain of the 12th squad. Unfortunately, during her transformation…†“She became a vizard, right?†Ichigo interrupted. “Yes,†Kisuke confirmed with a grim look on his face. “But why did she leave?†Toushirou asked. “It was later on, during a mission she was on with the former captain of the 6th squad, she refused to obey and order and was banished,†the shop owner explained. “One thing I don’t get,†Renji stated. “Why they said they’re Shadow and not shadows?†“I’m afraid he was interrupted before he could explain,†the shop owner replied. “Then we have little to go on,†Toushirou complained. “What about those things they stole?†“They were an old experiment of mine. They can be used to store reiatsu; I wanted to have them used in long battles when one runs out of energy so they could replenish them instantly.†“But what could they have wanted them for?†Matsumoto asked. None of them could find an answer to that question, not even the one who made those orbs could not understand what use they could have had for them. They were certain that they were important and in the event that they would return, the three that had just arrived from Seiretei had orders to remain there until further notice and gather any information they could. After Matsumoto and Toushirou left with Inoue later that night, Renji started arguing with his old friend about why she had gone up against such a powerful opponent. While the others were busy, Ichigo sat down on the porch next to the former captain who was as distracted as before. “Hey, you said she was someone you failed, what did you mean by that?†“As I said earlier, it was because I failed to help her become a Shinigami again,†Kisuke replied. “It looked like more than that,†Ichigo insisted. “She said ‘you betrayed us’, who was she talking about?†“I am afraid that is a private matter,†the shop owner answered, lowering his head. “Then can I ask a favour? I want you to train me again.†“Why not ask your old friends, the vizard?†“Don’t know…†“Very well, you will find me here any time you wish,†Kisuke said and went inside. Back in Soul Society, miles away from the Shinigami headquarters, deep inside a network of caves inside a mountain region, the group that entitled themselves Shadow had made their base. Though not the best of locations, they had transformed it into an underground villa. In one of the larger sections located in the lowest levels, designated for training, the leader of Shadow was hard at work. It was a tall white room, the ground had been cleared of rubble and stalagmites. There seemed to be only one entrance to the large room and the walls looked battle scared, full of holes and cracks, most of which were recent as small pieces still fell from them. She was in the middle of the room, panting and sweat dripping down from her forehead to her chin. On her right, a small box stood on a small wooden table and inside were a few of the crystal orbs she had stolen from Kisuke’s shop only they were glowing dark purple. Observing her from a corner was a tall man with short grey hair and blue eyes. Around his waist was a grey belt that held his sword. A few levels above the training room, was a small lounge filled with couches and armchairs where a few of the Shadow were sitting. Ina was walking around nervously while Caspian sat on one of the armchairs reading a book. On a couch to his right lay a young man with black hair long to his chin. He had his eyes closed and seemed to be asleep and in a corner was a middle aged woman, with dark brown hair that reached past her shoulder, who was tending to a few potted plants. “I can’t stand it any more!†Ina complained. “I want to go back there and finish off that vizard!†“There is no need for this manner of temperamental displays,†Caspian commented. “Yeah, can it will ya?†the man on the couch added opening one eye to reveal a red iris. “Well I’m bored and unlike you, Ulysses,†she said with an annoyed look on her face as she looked at the man on the couch. “I don’t like sitting around doing nothing.†“Go blow off some teenage hormones!†Ulysses said sitting up. “You wanna take this outside?†Ina said placing her left hand on the hilt of her sword. “Any time, flame-brain!†Ulysses replied standing. “Now, now you two,†the woman tending to the plants said with a smile. “There is no need for hostilities, you know she disapproves of it.†The two immediately calmed down and took their hands off their swords. Ulysses sat back down while Ina leaned against the cave wall. After a few minutes the silence was broken when the man with grey hair that had been watching their leader came up. “Well?†Ina asked impatiently. “The training goes well,†he answered. “By my estimates she will complete the first stage in only a few more days.†“Oh yeah!†Ina exclaimed. “Then it’s our turn right?†“Yes she asked the two of us, Caspian and Calypso to begin preparations starting tomorrow,†the man with grey hair answered. “Alright!†the young woman with red hair shouted and jumped in the air. “Great… thanks Harpuia,†Ulysses said sarcastically looking at the man with grey hair. “As if she wasn’t irritating enough as she was.†“Don’t be rude,†he replied. “She wants you and the twins to go after them.†“Oh joy…†Ulysses said, then stood up and walked away. “I swear, I think she is the only one who can stand him…†Caspian said after Ulysses left. “Well, she and you, Calypso,†he added looking at the woman next to the plants. “You all just do not understand him,†she replied.

Chapter IV – Will
As the weeks passed, both the Shadow and Ichigo trained as hard as they could. After she had finished hers, Kasumi spent most of the day watching the others as they trained. The expression on her face did not alter for one second, it was like her face was devoid of life, as were her eyes. Unlike her, the others trained in pairs. Scelera sparred with Harpuia while Caspian’s opponent was Calypso. But out of the four of them, it seemed that the teenage girl with red hair was the one training the hardest. She had more determination than the other three put together because she wanted to go back to human world and challenge Ichigo again. For the same reason, Ichigo and Kisuke were not slowing down for one second. They had already seen how powerful their enemies were and they needed to be prepared if they wanted to survive their next battle, their powers needed to grow and fast. Ichigo seemed to have the same determination to get stronger as Scelera did. He was sure they would meet again and he wanted to be prepared to face her. After seeing her fight and knowing that she was as strong as he was he needed to improve, there was no doubt that she would do the same. She was like him and like many other opponents he had faced in the past such as Zaraki and Grimjow, all she wanted and thought about was her next fight, her next opponent. Which made her very dangerous, it meant that in their next fight, after being interrupted in their previous one, she would be looking for one thing, the killing blow and it wouldn’t matter which one of them delivered it. But in their long hours of training, the teenager with orange hair noticed one thing. His sparing partner did not smile as much as he used to and when he did, he could see the pain that he was trying to hide behind it. Though he already knew better than to ask him any more questions about that woman and their past together, he couldn’t help but wonder what could have affected him so much. Whenever he would be too tired to train any more, Kisuke would go back up to the shop and lock himself up in a room. They were starting to worry about him but didn’t want to pressure him with too many questions. Even though he would have wanted to ask more about Kasumi, Ichigo decided to wait it out, something that paid off when Yoruichi showed up one evening. After she went into the room where Kisuke was usually found and yelled at him for half an hour, she went outside and sat down on the porch with a grumpy look on her face. The Shinigami representative waited a few minutes for her to calm down then went outside after her. “I thought you’d show up,” she said before he could open his mouth. “How’s that?” “Cause you’ve got the most reasons,” she replied. “For one I was hoping you’ve started using your brain enough to realise you need to know what you’re fighting before you go after her; second, if your brain failed you, there would still be your natural curiosity; and third…” she trailed off for a few moments. “Because there’s at least one question that’s been bugging you since you met them.” “They weren’t Shinigami or vizard so…” “What were they?” she voiced the question that he had been asking himself since he felt their reiatsu in his fight. “As you know, she was a vizard or at least she was the last time I saw her.” “What was she like?” Ichigo asked. “Calm, caring, shrewd… and strong for a lieutenant. She didn’t talk much but I could tell by the way se acted, the decisions she made that she put everyone else before her.” “She sounds like a good person,” Ichigo commented. “That’s exactly why you must not underestimate her,” Yoruichi replied with a cold but fierce look in her eyes. “Whatever her motivation is, don’t doubt for one second that she’s not ready to die to achieve her goal.” Her words made an impact on him because when he went back to training he seemed to be more focused, as if something was pushing him from behind to improve himself. Kisuke also noticed the change and did not hold back and after a while invited Renji to participate and the two of them attacked Ichigo at the same time. In Soul Society, Kasumi let them train without her supervision. While they were hard at work in the lowest level of their hideout, she was often found on the peaks of the mountains they were hiding in. She wanted to have some time alone to think and the others did not dare disturb her during that time. They would often see her, gazing at the horizon in the direction they knew was Seiretei. After over two weeks of intense training, the first group finally managed to pass the first stage. Scelera couldn’t wait to get back to the human world, however, the immense effort she put in exhausted her as well as the others and they needed to wait until their energy would be restored on its own. For that they had to wait four more days and on the fourth night, Harpuia went up top to speak to their leader who was again musing on top of the highest peak. He approached slowly and cautiously so as not to disturb her, lest she was too lost in her thoughts to notice him. Once he had made the mistake of approaching her too fast and almost ended up as a red stain on her clothes. “I take it you’re ready to go,” she began the conversation. “Indeed we are. Our powers seem to have returned to their normal status.” “Good, we leave tomorrow morning,” she said standing. “I will make all necessary preparations and inform the next group to prepare.” “And one more thing, tell Ina she is not to kill that vizard.” “Why not?” Harpuia asked confused. “He’s an intriguing individual and has a lot of power. I want him kept alive a little longer or at least until I say so. He may prove useful.” “As you wish, milady. But I’m afraid Ina will be displeased about the situation.” “Well them, I’ll have to make it up for her later,” Kasumi said with a grin. “How much longer do you estimate it will take us to prepare?” “Judging by our progress so far,” she said putting her left hand to her chin while resting her right hand on her waist. “If we put the six of them together it should take them about two, three weeks to complete faze one.” “Very well.” For a moment he lingered on the spot watching her, then turned around and started walking back down to the entrance to the cave. in one of the lounges, the other three that had been training were all gathered on the sofas or armchairs, still resting. Scelera, however, was leaning back and forth, back and forth, being too impatient to stand still for one moment. “Well?! are we going or not?!” she demanded. “Do not be so impatient, three of us will accompany her tomorrow as planned,” Harpuia answered. “Great! I can’t wait to get my hands on that vizard again!” the teenage girl with red hair said looking at her sword. “Calm yourself and more importantly you are to spare him… if you can,” he added with a shrewd look on his face.
